alight.com Giveaway! | Ends 1/18

So you didn't win last month's alight.com giveaway, huh? Don't worry, here's another chance! (And I hear you'll have another chance next month as well!)

If you wear size 14 or above, alight.com plus size clothing is a site you want to be familiar with. It's so frustrating for me to go to the mall and find either a) stores that carry up to size 12 or 14, b) stores that carry larger sizes, but think that all women who wear these sizes want to wear shapeless, boring clothes. you won't find that at alight. What you will find is a huge selection of tees, sweaters, jeans, pants, skirts, dresses, and accessories. Whether you're looking for casual clothes, career wear, party clothes, or even formal gowns, they have it.

How cute would this Ruby Rox dress be for a New Year's party?

I received a Blue Plate skirt from alight to review. It's has a beautiful floral print on a dark blue background. It also has just enough metallic threading throughout to make it really fun and contemporary. If you haven't heard of Blue Plate clothing, check them out here.

If you have a hard time finding jeans in your size that don't look like "mom jeans", check out their selection. Pair them with one of their cute sweaters for the perfect winter look!

alight.com plus size clothing has offered one of my readers the chance to win a free top (Alight's choice of top, your choice of size). And guess what? This is a monthly giveaway, so make sure you check back next month for another chance to win!

To be eligible for this giveaway you must sign up for alight's email list (top of the page). This is mandatory before you can do any other entry. Come back here and let me know you signed up in a comment below.

Santa Swap 2009

I was so happy to be able to participate in the Santa Swap over at The Mommy Files. I love getting involved with these, especially because you get to discover such great people! My Santa swap buddy was Becky at FranticMommy. I was so excited when I opened her box. I immediately saw chocolate, and I'm pretty proud to say that I was able to restrain myself form eating it long enough to go through the rest of her goodies. There was a yummy candle, a totally cute snowman figurine, a beautiful hand-painted Minnesota magnet. She fed my boyfriend and me with a super tasty beer bread mix. we ate it with baked potato soup the first night it got really cold here, it was awesome! She also fed my office supply habit (pens. post-its... seriously, I have an addiction). Of course, I'd like to show you pictures, but  my beloved ancient camera decided to stop working. Maybe Santa will bring me a new one...

Go check out her hilarious and insightful blog at FranticMommy. Ginormous thanks to Shannon at The Mommy Files for taking all the time to organize this!

Yes! To Cookies Review

Zero Gluten! Zero Sugar! Zero Starch! Zero Worries!

Yes! To Cookies is a company that was started by a man's quest to create an option that didn't raise the blood sugar of his diabetic wife.  The result was an all natural, tasty, carb calorie-free cookie.

Yes! To Cookies' products are:
Gluten free
Casein free
Low carb
High in fiber
Sweetened with Stevia

If you are diabetic, regulating your blood glucose levels, following a low-carb diet, or following a glycemic index diet, these are for you! There are zero grams on digestible carbohydrates, zero grams of sugar, zero net carbs, and zero glycemic index.

I (try to) follow a glycemic index diet, and the hardest part for me is forgoing dessert and sweet snacks. I also try to avoid artificial ingredients, especially artificial sweeteners. Yes! To Cookies are sweetened with erythritol (an easily-digestible sugar alcohol) and Rebaudioside A (a fancy name for Stevia, a plant-derived sweetener).

I was able to try the baked cookies in Cocoa-Licious and Strawberry-Banana Blitz. I opened the Strawberry-Banana Blitz and I immediately smelled a rich scent of bananas and strawberries. It reminded me of the smell of my favorite smoothie shop - yum! The taste was just as good as the scent. They were full of flavor, just sweet enough, and perfectly chewy. There was no chalky or artificial taste at all. The recommended serving is 2, but I ended up eating four. I didn't feel bad about it at all though, with only 80 calories, no net carbs, and 5 grams of fiber.

The next day I decided to try the Cocoa-Liscious. I'm so into chocolate, so I was really excited to try these. They had a really strong cocoa flavor. They're definitely not as sweet as most prepackaged cookies, but I don't like overly sweet foods anyway. These would be great if you like more of a semi-sweet chocolate taste. They weren't as chewy as the strawberry banana, and were a bit dry for me. The next day I decided to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds, and that helped a lot. My favorite was when I whipped up some cream (no sugar) and put a dollop (read: gigantic spoonful) of it on some heated cookies. For the rest of them I had some grand plans of making a low-carb trifle or cheesecake with them, but I went with the "eat one whenever I wanted to shove something sweet in my mouth" route.

Yes! To Cookies are great for so many people, including those who just want to watch their weight and overall health. You can buy a convenient 8 oz package of baked cookies for $9.95 or you can bake your own at home with their 16 oz cookie mixes at $15.95 (on sale from $18.95!). The baked cookies would make a great guilt-free dessert option for you holiday guests. And how nice would it be to bake a package yourself as a quick Christmas present for someone who monitors their sugar intake? Make sure you pick up some extra for yourself though!

You can purchase Yes! To Cookies products online at www.yestocookies.com or by calling 877-TRU-ZERO. They can also be found at several Austin, TX area retailers.

I was not compensated for this post. I received a gratis sample of the products to review. All opinions are my own.

Holiday Season Kickoff (and a giveaway!) | Ends 12/16

Hi all! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Anybody braved the Black Friday craziness? I'll occasionally go out and pick up a few deals on Black Friday, but this year I stayed at home. Cold weather + rain = me staying inside most of the day in my PJs and eating turkey sandwiches. I did find a few good gifts up for grabs online, so I didn't miss out too much. I'm almost finished decorating the tree. I'm still searching for a star, I think I'll start a quest on Etsy to find the perfect one. At this point I've gotten about half of the gifts done. this year I started early - usually I'm out there on Christmas Eve finishing up most of my shopping. This year I seem to be more excited for the holidays than most years. I've got the Christmas music playing, my wrapping center set up, and I'm already starting my endless holiday baking.

To help kickoff a great holiday season, I'm giving away a $10 Borders gift card to one reader.

To enter you must do one of the following, and leave a comment about it:

Follow my blog via Google Friend Connect
Subscribe via email

Extra entries (must do one of the above first)

Congrats to the winner, Coupon Clippin' Mommy!

I received no compensation for this post.

Happy Black Friday!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! For all you folks about to head out for some good Black Friday deals (and the saner ones doing it online!), check out Gizmodo's guide for the best deals on all kinds of electronics and gadgets. You can find what to buy and where to find it the cheapest.  Also take a peek at their anti-deals, a list of what electronics not to buy at all. The Twitterpeek (which only does Twitter... for the low, low price of $200?!) is apparently not going to be the best buy, even for the most avid Twitterholic on your list.

I've heard a lot of people are searching for the best price on the unofficial "game of the year", the New Super Mario Bros for the Wii. The cheapest I've found is on Amazon at $46.99 (I've already ordered a couple as gifts for the family Wii-addicts!). It's a few bucks cheaper than pretty much everywhere else, plus you get free shipping. Also, it's eligible for the $10 off $50 purchase on Amazon's Apparel, Electronics, Software, Video Games, and Computers if you use your Discover card.

Remember to keep checking on Amazon for their Black Friday Deals week. New items are going up constantly, and they sell out rather quickly. I've seen a bunch of $5 dvds and $10 Blu-rays, as well as super cheap games, jewelry, electronics, and more! Buy 'em while you can!

***Also, please remember to help those in need. If you see a great deal on a toy, pick up an extra one to donate to Toys for Tots or other program to give gifts to children in need!***

Happy (and safe) shopping!

Crazy Dog T-Shirts and Nacho Mama Tees Review and Giveaway | Ends 12/9

I have a thing for t-shirts. Plain t-shirts, graphic t-shirts, band t-shirts, and, of course, funny t-shirts. So I was definitely excited to be able to try out two t-shirts from Crazy Dog T-shirts and Nacho Mama Tees. From Crazy Dog, I received the Shop Smart T Shirt. I'm a lover of horror movies, and Army of Darkness is definitely one of my favorites. The tee is super soft, the colors are really vibrant, and it fits true to size. I also tried the Oceanic Airline t-shirt, one of my absolute favorites from Nacho Mama Tees. This is the perfect shirt to gear up for final season of Lost next February. (I'm so sad it's ending, but I'm so ready to find out all of the unanswered, freaky island mysteries.) It's just as soft too, and it arrived feeling like your favorite worn-in tee shirt, minus all the fading and holes! Both stores have such a huge variety of tees, there's really something for everyone.

One of my personal favorites from Crazy Dog is this Merlottes Bar tee, great for any Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood Fan.

(I'm really a movie/tv person, can ya tell?)

Of course, there's a lot more than movie tees. The Little Miss Christmas tee would make a great gift for your favorite tween, teen, or a young-at-heart adult! There's a huge selection of girly tees, and they're all adorable.

Here's another great holiday gift, the What'd You Get Me? tee from Crazy Dog

Buy it: Visit Crazy Dog T-shirts and Nacho Mama Tees, and get someone a gift they'll love (don't forget a tee for you too!) Right now's the perfect time too, because Nacho Mama Tees has 20% off everything in addition to their low prices. Crazy Dog has a big selection of $9 tees, perfect for a gift on a budget, or a reason to snag a bunch of them for yourself!

Win it: Crazy Dog is giving away your choice of tee to one lucky winner! Head over to Crazy Dog T-shirts and Nacho Mama Tees and check out your favorites. Tell me your favorite tee from Crazy Dog in a comment. (Mandatory entry, you must do this one before all other entries will be considered)

PreHistin Review and Giveaway | Ends 12/3 {CLOSED}

I, like so many other people, suffer from indoor and outdoor allergies. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that 50 million Americans have allergies, 40 million of those people indoor/outdoor allergies. From the AAFA website:

Indoor and Outdoor Allergies – (Allergic rhinitis; seasonal/perennial allergies; hay fever; nasal allergies) Approximately 40 million Americans have indoor/outdoor allergies as their primary allergy. (Many people with allergies usually have more than one type of allergy.) Approximately 10 million people are allergic to cat dander, the most common pet allergy. The most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers are:  tree, grass and weed pollen; mold spores; dust mite and cockroach allergen; and, cat, dog and rodent dander.

Fun stuff, huh? Until a few years ago, I had your standard seasonal allergies -- a little sniffling and sneezing in the spring mostly. But all of a sudden, BAM! itchy, red allergy eyes, violently sneezing whenever I went near the garden, and having to dust and vacuum about 5 times as much as normally. I never found out the exact reason this happened, but I do know that I've been actively trying to combat the symptoms ever since. I've had bad reactions to most OTC and presription allergy meds, so my main focus became keeping the house really clean, maintaining proper humidity levels, and avoiding the outdoors on "bad allergy" days.
I was recently given the chance to try PreHistin, the world's first pre-histamine. Histamines are substances that cause sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, and runny nose. You're probably familiar with "antihistmines", which are made to attack the histamines only after they're released. They also come with some unpleasant side affects, most notably drowsiness. PreHistin works by regulating the release of histamines so that your body may not react to them. PreHistin has been clinically shown to maintain healthy lgE levels, which have been linked to allergy symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestin, and runny nose. PreHistin's safe, all natural formula contains cyanocobalamin, which os one of the vitamins in vitamin B12. It supports immune function, and is safe for long term use.

I've been taking PreHistin for a few weeks, and already I've noticed it helping. There' some kind of plant or tree in this area that always makes me sneeze this time of the year, and I noticed the other day that it wasn't occuring. Also, since PreHistin doesn't cause me to become drowsy like antihistamines do, so I have no problems taking it in the morning.

The cherry lozenges have a nice taste, not sickeningly sweet or sour. You simply place one under your tongue, and let it dissolve. It dissolves rather quickly, so no having to spend a ton of time holding it under your tongue. Take it twice a day, in the AM and PM. Use for 30 consecutive days. PreHistin is for adults and children 12 years and up. For more info, go to www.prehistin.com.

Buy it: PreHistin can be bought at www.prehistin.com or by calling 1-877-4POLLEN. If you buy now, you can get a 2 months supply for only $19.95! Since each month's supply normally costs $29.99, you'll save $40.04! You can also buy 3, 6, and 12 month multipacks.

Win it: One of my readers will win a one month supply (one box of 63 cherry lozenges) of PreHistin (ARV $29.99)! To enter, you must do one of the the following:

-Follow my blog using Google Friend Connect
-Subscribe to my blog via email

Golden Moon Tea Giveaway | Ends 11/28 {CLOSED}

As much as I love a good cup of coffee, there's not a day that goes by where I don't sit down with my tea. There's nothing more zen than sitting down with a hot cup of tea, relaxing, and sipping the stress away.

Golden Moon Tea is just the website you need to find your favorite flavor as well as try some new blends. You'll find a wide variety of the finest hand-plucked whole leaf teas. Their selection includes black, white, and Oolong teas, in addition to the popular green tea varieties. Along with traditional tea flavors such as Jasmine and English Breakfast Tea, they also sell many flavored teas, such as the Coconut Pouchong, a green tea that was awarded Best Tea at the 2007 World Tea Expo.

If you're looking for something different, try the Pu-Erh, a wonderfully unique tea with an earthy and damp, yet sweet taste. Definitely not your typical cuppa, but it really is a great experience (and my personal favorite).

Golden Moon Tea also offers a selection of beautiful teapots and other teaware, so you can prepare yourself for your whole tea experience!

Make sure you check out their extensive tea resources under the label Tea University, for everything from brewing instructions to the history of tea! You can also find what you're looking for by using their handy drop down menus that sort their selection by tea origin, type of cuisine, time of day, price per cup, mood, and caffeine level. If you're worried about the quality of tea, be assured with their 100% satisfaction guarantee!

100% Pure Review

I recently had the chance to review some cosmetics from a wonderful company called 100% Pure. I've been trying to switch to all natural or organic beauty products, which isn’t always easy, especially regarding cosmetics. It seems that natural cosmetics’ effectiveness tend to be hit or miss. I was so pleased to find that 100% Pure products are an absolute hit! Their products have been feautured in many magazines, such as Elle, Self, CosmoGirl, Latina, Redbook, and Real Simple.

I was able to try two of their fruit pigmented make-up products, the lip gloss and the lip & cheek tint. The lip gloss ($13), which I tried in Sheer Pomegranate Wine, which is my new favorite lip color. It’s made of 83% Vitamin E, and the rest of the ingredients are fruit pigments. It’s not sticky or oily, it just feels moisturizing. It lasts a pretty long time, but I find myself putting it on pretty often just because it feels so good! The color is fairly sheer, and it makes a great daytime lip color. It also looks great paired over a lipstick or lip tint. It’s a great lip gloss for those who don’t want to look like they made out with a greasy piece of pizza or a pot of glitter.

I was a little apprehensive after opening the lip and cheek tint ($15), which I got in Peach Glow. The color and scent reminded me of the Barbie play makeup set I got as a little girl. When I first put it on, I thought it was a bit shiny at first, and I thought it would make my face look greasy. As I continued putting on the rest of my makeup on, it seemed to settle in, and I ended up looking like what I was going for – having a healthy glow! Since I’m so fair, I have a tough time with powder and mineral cheek colors, and this was great for my skin tone. It doesn’t make my face sticky, and it doesn’t feel like it’s going to run off. It’s a little light as a lip tint, but it does add a natural-looking hint of color. It’s 100% natural, made of fruit pigments, Vitamin C, Shea Butter, Grapeseed Oil, Cocoa Butter, Honey Beeswax, and Vitamin E. Overall, the Peach Glow lip and cheek tint would be a great way to get that perfect glow, both in the winter and the summer.

I was also able to try the Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream ($19). I always have the dreaded under eye circles, and when my allergies are kicking in, I get major puffiness too.  After using it just a few days, I noticed that the dark circles were visibly reduced. An added bonus is the scent. Since it’s made with organic green tea and organic green tea (among other organic and natural products), it has a wonderful scent. It has a kind of chocolate-y coffee scent that really makes you want to put it on every day!

100% Pure also offers a huge line of bath and body products, in addition to their cosmetics and skin care lines. Love coffee? There’s an Organic Dark Chocolate Mocha Body Scrub. Got dry winter skin? Try the Blood Orange Shea Body Butter. There are so many products that sound delicious, and there’s even a line for kids!

These products are made without the nasty chemical preservatives you usually find in beauty products. If you’re worried about how long the products last without those preservatives, don’t! The reason these products can be made without chemical preservatives is that they’re made without water and air, the two elements needed for bacterial growth. There’s a simple number on the packaging that indicates how long you should keep them. Best of all, the products are 100% natural, 100% vegan, and gluten free!

100% Pure is also a great place to get holiday gifts for anyone who cares about what products they put in and on their body! Flat shipping fee of $5 and free shipping on orders over $50!

Tasty Halloween Treats

Every year I spend a couple of days before Halloween baking, decorating, getting treat bags done, finishing costumes, and anything else. I'll be posting what I'm baking this year. Here's the first treat:

Pumpkin Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Frosting

Makes 24 cupcakes
Hands-On Time: 15m
Total Time: 40m

Ingredients
1 18.5-ounce box yellow cake mix (plus the ingredients called for in the package directions)
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 15-ounce can pumpkin puree
2 8-ounce bars cream cheese, at room temperature
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
24 pieces candy corn

Directions
Heat oven to 350° F. Line two 12-cup muffin tins with paper liners. Prepare the cake mix as directed but with the following change: Add the pumpkin pie spice and substitute the can of pumpkin puree for the water called for in the package directions.
Divide the batter among the prepared muffin tins and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean, 18 to 22 minutes. Let cool.

Meanwhile, using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and sugar until creamy. Spread on the cupcakes and top each with a piece of candy corn.

Shea Terra Is Awesome!

So last week I received a box full of awesome beauty goodies that I won in a giveaway from My Beauty Bunny. The products were all Shea Terra, a line of organic, African beauty products, from Green4YourSoul.com. Green 4 Your Soul has a wide selection of products that are USDA certified organic, fair trade, and recycled products  They make sure their products are safe, effective, and green. They are what what all natural beauty stores should be like.

Here are just a  few of the items I really enjoyed:

  • Organic Certified Shea Butter - It's shea butter. That's it. No fragrances, preservatives, or yucky chemicals. It's great!
  • Marula Face and Body Oil - If you haven't heard the current buzz about marula oil, you will soon! What is it? Some people call it the African miracle oil. It's a great moisturizer, used by many women to reduce wrinkles. No wrinkles for me yet, but it did make the patches of dry skin on my arms go away almost immediately! I also tried them on my upper arm bumpies (if you want to get technical, it's called keratosis pilaris), and it seems to have significantly reduces the bumpage!
  • African Lemongrass Indigenous Black Soap Elixir - A great cleanser for skin prone to acne and blackheads. since I have combination skin (more like bipolar- extreme dryness and extreme oil, all in one day!), I have a hard time finding a good facial cleanser. This one works so well, and it's totally devoid of all those seriously harsh chemicals that are found in nearly all traditional cleansers. The lemongrass scent is totally energizing too.

Oh, and if you're a sucker for something that smells deliciously sweet and fruity, but want to keep it all natural, try the Honeybush Peach Body Nectar Oil Spray. It smells like really ripe peaches and red rooibos tea!

There's no guarantee that these products will work the same for everyone, but I've decided that they're my new favorite organic beauty company!

My thanks to Green 4 Your SoulShea Terra, and My Beauty Bunny. And click here to enter My Beauty Bunny's 31 Days of Giveaways. Hurry! There are only a few days of new contests left!
